Question When I login, alsamixer is muted.

A very minor point, but whenever I login (about a dozen times a week) the mixer for alsa has all channel muted. I've tried alsactl store, but it doesn't seem to work. I also notice that none of my oss applications produce any sound, do I need to turn on the sound server for this to work?

For the login-with-no-sound issue, I have the same problem, and I have a little workaround, which goes like this:
Use alsamixer and tweak the settings as you like.
(as root) alsactl store
cp /etc/asound.state /etc/asound.myconfig
Then add to the bottom /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
cp -f /etc/asound.myconfig /etc/asound.state
alsactl restore
And that takes care of that. For the OSS issue, try these commands as root:
modprobe snd-mixer-oss
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
Then try your OSS apps.
