Whats the best program for...?

I'm new to linux, so I don't know of many linux programs. Here's what I got so far:

bittorrent client - azureus
office - openoffice
aim - gaim
photoshop - gimp

Thats about it so far. I'm looking for a music player, xmms is ok, but looking for other peoples opinion. Looking for an all around media player, a dvd player, email client, umm... thats all thats coming to mind right now. If anyone else can suggest some must have apps, please do :D Thanks guys.

I use evolution for email; xine for dvds; and firefox for internet. Ok, you didn't ask about internet, but I thought I'd throw that in there. :)

kryptobs2000 03-01-2005 02:29 PM

oh, yeah I use firefox too, forgot to mention that, but thanks for the suggestions I'll try them out.

edit: Any good websites for linux news, or linux related things as well?

Must haves:

DVD Ripper/Encoder: dvd::rip
Burner: K3B
CD Ripper: Grip
Video Player (grab the codec packages from MPlayer's site): Xine or MPlayer
HTML Edit: Quanta
Word Processor (if you must): Abiword
Text Edit: Gvim or just vim
Terminal: Aterm
Lightweight File Manager: Rox-filer
Security: Nmap, Nessus

I also really like the LaTeX plugin for vim.

Nintendo Emulators (sorry, I'm a fanboy):
VisualBoyAdvanced (GBA)--very cool.
Zsnes (SNES)--fantastic emulator.
Mupen64 (N64)--not perfect but it is still being developed and already does pretty well.
Tuxnes (NES)--classic, total classic.

Where the heck do I find Evolution for download? The only thing I've found is at Evolution's webpage but that's a trial version. I use Slackware 10.1.

Thanks!

If you can not get Evolution, another e-mail client is Mozilla Thunderbird.

DVD Player - Video Lan Client, mplayer, Xine, Ogle
Video Player - Video Lan Client, mplayer, Xine
Audio Player - Video Lan Client, mplayer, Xine, Xmms

There are many more at http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-l...en/table.shtml

Great list thanks, and yeah, I'm interested about evolution too, but dunno where to get it.

Vindane 03-01-2005 06:04 PM

Yeah actually I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird right now. But I've yet to see an email client for Linux as nice as Evolution.

Matir 03-01-2005 07:42 PM

I use evolution myself. It's "ximian evolution", now owned by Novel (who also owns Suse). What distribution do you use?

There should be a full version available, as it's GPLed. (I'm aware it can be charged for, but I have it under GPL)

I'm using slackware 10.1, I can't find it anywhere. Could I get a link as to where to dl it?

Optimistic 03-01-2005 10:15 PM

This link is for Slackware 10, but it might be close enough. I haven't upgraded to 10.1--are the changes that drastic?
