Whats a good distro for an old laptop?

Hey everybody! I'm looking for a good linux distro that will fit on my old laptop. I haven't had any luck finding one because the only ones I can find out there are either huge (RedHat, SuSE) or they're tiny ones that fit on a floppy. My hard drive is 800MB so im trying to find a distro that will fit on about 300M that includes gcc and if I'm lucky, maybe a GUI. The closest I can find is Slackware but it's still quite a bit too big. If anyone can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

You should be able to pare RH down to that size, but you will have to choose all the packages manually; but for what you want, you will have to do that with any distro. A solid one that can get it done is Debian.
