problems with agp SIS6326 wth RH6
 

Still having problems, trying to configure my graphics card (agp SIS6326) for my x windows, researched it on the internet and it wont even take xf86_svga. I cant figure out which x Server to use. the screen goes black after Xcofigurator tests my configuration, then tells me i have a problem. Ive checked H & V refresh rates and they are right.
can the command ls /usr/X11R6/bin/XS* do the trick?

it boots into the gnome, but its missing parts and colours of windows, and the mouse dont work , I hope my monitors not damaged.

Is an x-server and a driver the same thing? I thought I had already got the driver sorted.

sort of... but not really. i'm a little iffy on the difference myself, but the Xserver generally refers to the XF86 program itself, or the box that's running it. the driver loads on top of the server, and multiple drivers for different cards for different monitors can run on the same server. it gets complicated, and generally it's not a distinction that ends up being made on your typical one-card and one-monitor setup.

many times when the driver isn't loaded or isn't specified, it will return an error saying "Xserver not present" or something like that. i haven't actually run into this error in a while, so i don't remember exactly what it said.

anyway, most of the time, getting the driver correct will fix the problem. speaking of which, did you get your's working?

Er well , the problem im having seems to be a common problem with my specific card. I did the fix, ie added and changed lines to the /etc/XF86Config file, however it was located at/etc/X11/XF86Config so I saved the changes to the latter file and then the former file for fun,
before i used to get something resembling a GUI with a red hat
now I get " according to/var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running 486 ,492, 497, (etc) but seems to have been murdered mysteriously , init id 'X' responding too fast, disabled for five minutes. "

What this means, I have no clue what so ever

I had a lot of trouble with video by SiS. I solved most of my problems by using an option in Xconfigurator. (My system is RH7.1)

I got an XF86Config file to work by running "Xconfigurator --noddcprobe --expert" without the quotes. Some kind soul mentioned to me that SiS did not respond well to being probed. This worked for me! All I did was answer the questions.

Now if only I could move my icons in KDE....

Kind of lost with this Linux stuff, disappointed with O'reileys red hat book, not too in depth, think I need to swat up on some tutorials.
