what software does this? Easy To Note/Write/Type/Outline/See — 5 basic requirements inside (as of 2017)

what software does this that you've used?

minimal requirements

* can make bullet points easy like if you type '* [space]' then it would make a bullet point
* what i type into the software is responsive to the size of the window (going to keep the window/app like a 'sidebar')
* is easy to hide/expand all info under a higher-level bullet point
* can bold like a regular word doc so you can see the bold easily, so no markdown (auto-bold the first line/bullet point is a plus)
& minimal UI (prefer completely clean UI)

site, app, anything, only the above matters, everything else is irrelevant

Habitual 01-24-2017 07:17 AM

Dokuwiki, any wiki

zim-wiki if you need a pretty app.

szboardstretcher 01-24-2017 08:36 AM

Non-wiki software to use Markdown:

https://github.com/maciakl/MarkdownJournal

Saves/Displays from Dropbox currently. Could be changed to support any path though, with some code change.

linuxhard 01-24-2017 08:47 PM

sorry i need to clarify that for #4 the bold has to be visible as you type it

like in a regular word doc

so it can't be markdown

linuxhard 01-24-2017 08:54 PM

btw im pretty the wikis do not meet #3

also markdown journal doesnt look like it meets #3 either

ondoho 01-25-2017 01:21 PM

maybe you have to write this software that does exactly what you want :D
[usually at this point they come up with something that meets their requirement, if only to prove me wrong.]

Yeah, free software sucks, huh?
Folding bulleted lists? That IS Shiny :)
No wiki "as is" does that.

linuxhard 01-29-2017 03:23 PM

what do you mean by 'shiny'

for the troll comment, "[usually at this point they come up with something that meets their requirement, if only to prove me wrong.]" -- maybe it's better to be not wrong in the first place

anyone on this site take notes?

anyone know a better place on the entire Web to ask?

any OS, macos, win10, chromeos, doesnt matter

Habitual 01-29-2017 05:28 PM

n/m.
We've given you three leads and you change the spec during transit.

But folding bullet-ed lists I have not seen outside of say a wiki using addons and/or plugins.
Does mean note apps (CherryTree may have it) will.)

The feature is called "code folding" and I mostly see it in Visual Text Editors,
or modd'ed wiki-type software.
Good Luck.

nope. only worse.

anyhow, accidentally i stumbled over haroopad the other day.
i think that's as close as you'll ever get without starting to code yourself.

Habitual 01-30-2017 05:39 AM

  • rich text (foreground color, background color, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, small, h1, h2, h3, subscript, superscript, monospace)
  • syntax highlighting supporting several programming languages
  • images handling: insertion in the text, edit (resize/rotate), save as png file
  • multi-level lists handling (bulleted, numbered, to-do and switch between them, multiline with shift+enter)

CherryTree looks promising.

since the replies (from only those that have been helpful like habitual, clearly) were trying to be helpful

i thought i give you the answer (for your 'extra' knowledge):

there's an entire category call 'outliners'

there's a lot to go through so not sure what's the best at the moment, but quick examples are:

* dynalist
* checkvist

historical examples are workflowry, etc.

--

btw i didn't actually change the bare minimal needs at all

--

i should also mention (for you 'extra' knowledge) that what im looking for is exceptionally basic, it's 2017

there are amazing things out there, so what im looking for is pretty 'ancient'

--

also onenote that's been here for a very very long time -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_OneNote

already does this

doesn't really meet #5 though

linuxhard 02-11-2017 09:24 PM

im not sure how technical habitual is, but im not

really really need to solve this problem eventually -- https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtop...?f=46&t=237594

Doug G 02-12-2017 12:04 AM

The default mediawiki in Fedora supports folding including bullet lists, no extensions needed.

i don't really understand your posts.

you have been given quite a few things that might meet all or part of your demands/wishes.

what about those?

why are you namedropping some (unknown to me) presumably old software?

or are you somehow trying to prove that you are "right" and somebody else is "wrong"???

and what has a link to mintforums "Can't Boot From USB At Start" got to do with anything???

using onenote as search query i get a lot of results:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=linux+onenote

linuxhard 02-19-2017 02:20 AM

"Yeah, free software sucks, huh?"

-- all those mentioned are free

"Folding bulleted lists?"

still don't know what is meant by shiny in this context, but everything said is extremely basic

Habitual 02-19-2017 07:06 AM

It's Habitual.
Show some respect. I don't owe you any answers, only clues. Get your own answers.

"shiny" is a label used for any feature that catches a user's eye.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_folding in any language you choose.

Mediawiki as suggested.

Want some? Get some.
