What services are needed?

What services are absolutely needed for linux to run even though I'm a regular computer user who just surfs the internet, receive and send email and just downloads stuff?

Why don't you try disabling them (one at a time) to see what difference it makes for you? If you're using a GUI, you probably shouldn't turn off the X server, and Internet access clearly requires networking services.

Look at which services (and start or stop them) with the system-config-services command in Fedora.

That's pretty boring. If all you want is to send and read email, get a cell phone and try talking to someone. Better yet, try smoke signals like back in the old days. Computers connected to net are meant to explore, travel, watch baseball, try the latest virus, communicate with people of questionable reputations oceans away. Fill it to the rim with the latest and greatest. It won't help you chase skirt. You are on your own with that, but you can do lots more than "Hello" and "Regards".
