This is very true, but is definitely not an argument for a Linux version of IE. Including browser-specific codes in any wed page is very bad and practice, and it is really up to web designers to make their products accessible, not the consumer to bow to their every demand.

Is it really reasonable to expect a customer to pay several hundred pounds for an entire operating system, and trash their computer in the process of installing it, just to conduct a single bank transaction? It is, however, reasonable to expect a professional web designer to be able to use standard code!

No, but it definitely is a good argument for the flogging of incompetent webmasters.

Linux kim2p3lin 2.6.5-7.111.19-smp #1 SMP Fri Dec 10 15:10:58 UTC 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

. . . as part of Suse Linux.
Here is the url: http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net
But install at your own risk .. I am not aware how stable or not the driver is.

I like many am scared of installing anything that goes that low-level
Including Reiser4 .. which I rather give a couple of years to let it mature more.

emailing the directors of the company
saying how their crappy webmaster is costing them millions in lost customers
is a nice way to flog them

DOOM3
seriously i think more games should be supported by linux
if we could get linux to run .exe files or maybe just have an emulator that works a little better and more integrated then WINE linux would be a much better OS

Agreed, however, while Gimp actually does some things better than Photoshop (and I do use The Gimp from time to time when I run Windows), Photoshop does a lot of things either better or faster than Gimp. Also, I happen to LIKE Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. No one tool is the BEST solution for every task. In Windows I often still use an old version (6.0) of PaintShop Pro because it's lightweight, powerful, and can handle all but the largest of tasks, so if I need to get something done quick I launch PSPro because it's faster than Photoshop on given hardware.

Also, for NLE - there are free Linux tools which do bits and pieces of what commercial NLE products can do. There are some commercial NLE alternatives (e.g., MainActor) but the feature set and performance does not match that of MediaStudio, or even VideoStudio or VideoWave (I won't mention Premiere because it's a P.O.S.). MainActor is a good start (I tried the evaluation), but at its price point, it doesn't match what can be done in Windows or Mac NLE products in the same price range.

Internet Explorer? The reason people mention this is that it's a royal PITA to get MSIE running under wine, or you buy Crossover Office and run it under that, or reboot to Windows to test your web app. Firefox may be superior when it comes to standards compliance and user experience, but when testing MSIE compatibility, no browser other than MSIE will cut it for validating MSIE compatibility (duh).

Newbies? Don't assume everyone here is a newbie. Some of us were running Linux when it was a seven-floppy distribution and EVERYTHING else needed to be downloaded (usually from wuarchive), and have simply been away for a while. To state that everyone posting in this thread is a n00b is a bit elistist, don't you think?

I did. I told them that I am not about to spend hunderds of shekels on a new OS just to check my bank statement. They pretty much said that there was nothing to do about it, so I went and opened another account at the bank next door! After STRESSING how important it is for me to log in under Linux (it's not, but I like to exagerate to make a point), I open the account, wait a week for password, go to log in, and !!! NO !!! they also sniff browsers. What is this?!?

By the way, does anyone know of a good music-managment program for linux? Somehting with a library feature like (sorry) windows media player? How do Linux users manage thier mp3's?

K3B burn mp3 for me too ,but not as mp3 disc but as data CD disc .Like my mp3 Player reconigse both data CD and Mp3 CD but When it burn as mp3 CD ,it could skip the ablum by ablum .But when burn as data CD it could only skip track but don't know the different between ablum nor artist
And when I burn mp3 in linux I could burn up to 300 or 400 mb worth of mp3 and sometime 200 mp3 in single CD but My CD player read only as Data CD.But if I burn in musicmatch box I could choose as mp3 CD and then I could only burn 100 mp3 or so but my CD player reconigse as mp3 Disc.

I would like linux to be able to handle .exe files without the need of wine and stuff. This is one of the few reasons i still have windows on my computer. If linux could easily handle exe files i could get rid of windows for good.

What decent programs are there that can parallel Nero in being in all in one Media center program? Everyone mentions K3B but K3B is useless at converting Avis into DVDs or Jpgs into DVDs. Also Nero includes authoring software for DVD encoding and has a ton of ripping programs and utilities. I have tried Avidemux and while it does a good job at encoding mpgs it sucks at synching audio with video if the original avi is not within parameters. Nero avoids this hassle and allows you to creat DVD movies in seconds that you can choose bitrates, audio compression, aspect ratios and the like.

Aggh...
