...as far as M$ taking notes from Apple, that's basically what Windows is--a big rip-off of Mac-OS, but without the security or stability.

"...as far as M$ taking notes from Apple, that's basically what Windows is--a big rip-off of Mac-OS, but without the security or stability."

They should rip off the idea of starting again with a rock solid BSD based foundation and stick their proprietary stuff on top of that. Instead they're going the hard way with longhorn which will be released... who knows, maybe 2006, or 2007, and anyone's guess how long it will take to work out the bugs that will surface when great numbers of actual users start messing with it.

Sometimes one wonders if they aren't just a wee bit insane. By the time longhorn is out, Linux will have advanced greatly, and who knows, there might be an OS/XII for the mac.

I can!

They make stuff that don't work, and they design it to pirate your personnal information (and that feature works!).

Business Software:

Quicken or be able to do online banking with GNU Cash.

I have found very little in the way of commercial/business software that does not meet or exceed its windows counter parts. The ability to use online banking is the exception. I thought about trying to get the MAC version and play with getting that to work.

Games:

Battlefield 1942. I know the server version for linux exists. I would like the client to be able to work. I would be willing to pay the normal windows pricing for the game or any software for that matter.

Dreamweaver....

I would love to if Dreamweaver can be ported in Linux. However,As far as I know,Macromedia is still wait and see on Linux industry.Maybe they think that they cannot earn much more money than developing application on Windows.Because Linux's desktop development and popularity grows very slow.

Microsoft's VS.Net would be nice, or at least a descent editor with intellisense. and green comments.

well they are not going to port a microsoft product to the linux environment but then someone could make an equivalent, but then again is there a point? programming with stuff like VB that can basically only run in windows? you may as well just use windows, correct?

and there is tonnes of beautiful editors in linux, and there are many that support coloring text such as comments and errors, etc....

well, i know they aren;t just gonna make a version for linux, lol, but i love ms .net 2k3. Its so clean, and crisp, its one M$ program i actually enjoy using.

I only use it for c++, so hving a similar linux app would be spiffy. I've tried komodo, but, heh, its komodo. bug city.

Nero Multimounter.

It comes as part of Nero Burning ROM, and exists so that you can look up old TOCs on multisession disks. I found a new use for it last night. I bought my first ever copy protected Album (note that I did not call it a CD as strictly speaking it is not). I hadn't even considered ripping it or copying it, but it would not play on my domestic system!

I put it in my computer and there were mac and Windows programs present to play the disc though the actual files to be played were not visible. I then rebooted to my Windows partition and used the "Multimount" extension that Nero adds to Windows Explorer and guess what? I had access to all the proper audio tracks, was able to rip the disk and create a Compact Disk which would now play on my domestic system. It took me all of five minutes to reveal the "hidden" tracks.

All the publisher has done is inconvenience me. If I can access the tracks, the pirates can in less time than I did. Pathetic!

It must be possible to write a new "mount" command/extension for Linux which allows selection from a list of TOCs on Multisession disks. This has the additional use of being able to look up old versions of files concealed on data disks as well as forcing record companies to adhere to CD standards!

I think Smart Music should make Linux Software.. That I would use for Jazz Band.. so far all they have is Windows and Mac software.. and they just came out with the OSX version, so the linux version won't come out for a very long time..

I would like to see the Palm Desktop and Hotsync manager on Linux. I have yet to get Kpilot to do diddly-squat. ...same for Gnome Pilot.

Also, does WINe emulate ports such as USB?
