It's so cool to read this two-year old thread and see how much things have changed. WINE is now almost at v1.0 and runs a LOT of the software mentioned. Nero has already ported their CD-burning software to Linux. Countless other examples here. GimpShop tries to fill the PhotoShop niche. More countless examples of how OSS projects have matured and now even beat the originals in some cases. Very interesting. Down is one direction things certainly aren't going.

I actually had exactly this craving. I ended up installing DOSBOX exactly for this purpose! (It works very well.)
Orcad's Pspice
B^2 Spice
Power World
max PLus+ II
Mathcad
These programs are really holding back linux adoption in the EE student world.
Many schools use Matlab and Mathcad. Right now only Mathematica (very pricey) and Matlab are available for Linux. Wine does not emulate any of the spices mentioned above properly.
Pay, well, as a student - an equal cost of the windows versions would be fair and acceptable. Just keep in line with windows program pricing, as the OS already saves your school/company money. We just need the tools.
I will also vote for Autocad and Pro Engineer
More features for Star Office, or why not a modern Word Perfect Suite port. That would give a nice set of tools for productivity.
Distribution: Gentoo (~amd64) (and sometimes Manjaro)
