And thats why you don't invest in a file format that will be forgotten in 5 years. Some of MS's own apps can't even read older versions of their file formats
We all start in a format that's available to us at the time we begin. No one knows what will be forgotten in X number of years.
Isn't the point of this thread that many "old" programs need porting into a current OS format?

well its pretty obvious that MS's .doc format will not be readable forever, ODF is something that someone at least will be able to figure out to read in a long time.

No, the point of this thread is what programs you would like to be ported to linux
firstly, i admit i didnt read all the postings in this thread because its so long so excuse my ignorance.
i also. too many pages

everyone comes in trying to find "exact duplicate" of their primary os apps, namely ms windows users.
allow me to ask you this question, when you first used windows what is your preferance application? the answer is simple, none what so ever because the question should be "how can i do x task in ms windows?"
this should be the approach to any new platform. linux is NOT ms windows.
if we look at the current picture as a whole in the os scenario there is nothing you can do in ms windows that you can't do in linux in respect to desktop perspective.
I'd like to see AutoHotKey made available to speed up repetitive tasks. I've installed it under Wine but although it starts/loads without any sign of error messages it simply does not respond to the 'programmed' key combinations.
i think at this point we all would like to see one thing or another.
some one needs to sum all the requests up. and put a number by it, declaring the amount of request's for it in this thread.
then we will all know.
Major issue is not so much will they make it. its why. Most windows developers dont want to touch linux, Visa/Versa.
Dont get me wrong. i like it both ways, this is why i still dual-boot for some things. but, the Ending Solution to all are problems is Banning Closed Source Licensing.
another issue is the Companys wallets. and the one way they know for sure that another Developer or Cracker cant Duplicate there products. is to use Closed Source Licensing and Enforce anti-debbugging. in Encrypted/packed Loaders. to insure that, no matter what they dont lose 1 cent..
I dont mind paying for software, and this is not what thats about. but i dont like paying for software thats useless. like Windows.

Reason: grammer, order and Punct.
> "Photoshop or a photoshop clone type of program."
I've seen that request so many times that I'm beginning to think it has some sort of hidden meaning . Why does the Gimp always get ignored? It comes with every distribution so its not like people don't know its there. It's pretty intuitive. I use it and it seems to work well. I have access to Photoshop but I've not had a need to go there.
I think the problem here is that the Gimp and Photoshop have a sufficiently different interface that people who know one don't easily operate the other. The result is that there is a lack of realistic comparison.
I've seen beginners struggling with nero only to find out that they need a different version to do what they want to do. I don't know about Ultra iso.
K3B writes isos and does all the copying and backup you need to do without any fuss or prior knowledge of this stuff. Not that nero is not a good program, but I can't imagine why someone wouldn't want to replace it with K3B.
I'm wondering if it's just the progam names that are unfamiliar to some folks. Maby Linux developers should offer programs with a name choice.

Seems to me I've seen tables of Winders applications with their Linux equivalents somewhere -- or maybe it was Linux apps with their Winders equivalents -- but I don't remember where....
