What Programs Work On SuSE 9.1?
 

Hello,

I'm currently running Win Xp Home Edition. I've installed Sp2 and, its kinda screwed up my Java Script Capabilities for surfing on the internet. Most websites don't work. So i've decided i'm going to format my PC and give it a total re-vamp.

Before i do format it, I would like to know if programs like Microsoft Word and DOOM 3 and other programs like that work ok on SuSE 9.1? Cuz i don't want to have to install it and find out nothing works. I've heard of some windows emulator thingys but how good are they? Were can they be got from? Are they very affective at all? How do you install programs? Is there a start menu like windows?

Your Help would be greatly appreciated a.s.p as the weekend is the best time for me to re-format the PC.

There is an equivalent for Microsoft Office called Open Office which is supported by Sun,
and is actually very good. Read read and write to *.doc, *.xls, and *.ppt.
Doom3 is repoted to be getting a Linux version in the near Future:

SuSE Has it's own database of proted Linux programs, which you can just select and
install whenever you want, this program is called YaST.
I'm using SuSE 9.1 and have never even thought about Windows Emulators.
UT2004 has a Linux installer which works well.

To play games on linux an nVIDIA card is really reccomonded.

You seem to be making a not uncommon error in wanting Linux to be a version of Windows.
I always suggest assuming Windows programs do not run on Linux and being surprised to find that some do. There are also many programs that can be used in place of familar Windows programs.
For M$ Word you probably want to check out Codeweavers. Depending on your needs, the free Open Office program may be suitable.
I will leave the game subject for someone more familar with it. There are a number of games with Linux versions and some can be made to run on Linux.
I am also going to suggest that you may be happier to test drive Linux by dual booting both Windows and Linux for a time so you can really learn it rather than be frustrated when something is not like Windows and requires a trip to some documentation before you get a handle on it.
I worry that someone wanting to wipe out Windows because they are so frustrated with it and completely replace it with Linux, which they have never used, is asking for more frustration.

ok then,

so there is a program called office open or something like that. If I were to create a ".doc" file with it, can i open it on another pc using windows with microsoft word? - and the same with ".xls" - open it with Microsoft Excel? How / where could i download this from?

When i mentioned DOOM 3, i didn't just mean that program but games in general. Will most modern day games work on SuSE 9.1?

oo comes from http://openoffice.org please remember that less than 10 seconds in google and you would have got there wihtout anyone elses help...

linux isn't windows. 'modern day' has nothing to do with anything, if you have the original boxed version of doom than id software offers a wrapper to allow you to run it under linux, you'll need most of the data off of the original win cd's

If you install SuSE you'll find you get Open Office and a ton of other stuff by default. When you install it, just select the applications you want from the software list and "Presto".
Dunno about doom though. Sounds sinisister. More sinister than XP.

Get a live disk of Linux:

it runs totally from the CD. You put the disk on your drive, you turn the computer on/reset and it will boot into Linux. Nothing will be installed on the HD (unless you clearly tells it to do...) and it's a great way of trying Linux without messing with your Windows. Plus, you will get the feeling how it "looks" like and get to know a lot of applications available for Linux...

I've tried the live cd. It works but takes ages to load. So thats another reason why i want to re-format my PC and actually install it on the the hard disk.

dont do that cuz if you get stuck then your screwed. What format is your hardrive? becuase most linux distros will just make their own partition. Don't blank your hardrive unless you REALLY know linux

If your format is NTFS then in order to make a custom partition you need a program such as Partition Magic otherwise the distro will just go with teh default partition

well, i usually format the hard disk and delete any partitions to give it a full re-vamp. But i can't be botherd to do that any more cuz it takes too long to create a new partition. I just want to delete windows and install SuSE 9.1. Or is there something else i have to do to get it to work?

Could you give me a step by step guide on how to format my PC, until the part where you follow the onscreen instructions in the SuSE 9.1 Setup. From then on its easy.
