What os on big ftp?

Whats os is the best one for a big ftp server? It should be very stable and minimum updates/reboots.
Also kind of linux vs bsd ?

any whistle-free distro will do, you can even have Mandrake runnng as your base, just don't clutter it with unnecessary stuff like pretty GUI, development tools, etc.

I need a os what can run really good under pressure and will be very secure and FTP should be very conf'able.
Thanks.

freebsd is good for that

I don't think the *nix distro choice will have nearly as much of an impact as the ftp prog you pick and your ability to config it (and your os, whatever you may choose)
That's probably not what you are wanting to hear, but it's just my opinion.

Openbsd has the most secure default install. Based on the questions you are asking, and assuming you don't have the time to dig too deep into host security, that would be my recommendation.

Any *nix OS can be secured.

Learn chroot and do not allow anonymous-writable ftp. That's a good start.

Is FreeBSD secure? does it handle lots of users? Any good and really conf'able ftp progs for freebsd ?

Thanks for all helpers :)

for security reason you should use sftp. It work very good on linux (RedHat) I dont know about bsd

krisx 07-22-2003 02:17 AM

I think I will go with freebsd. People are talking that It's very good for a ftp os, It can handle the pressure and more reliable than any linux o_0

sftp may or may not be needed here. We don't really have enough details, only that it's going to be a heavily loaded server. If it's just going to be a public assess server, then then server just needs to be stable and must survive buffer overflow attacks and such. If the data needs to be protected from prying eyes, then use sftp. Otherwise the overhead is just not worth it.

Its not public ftp. Private and somehow i need to conf it that one account per computer. I mean if I make a account for "Mark" then he can only access the ftp only from his computer not "Matt's" or anobody elses.

Some pole sayd that pure ftp is a good choise.
