what media player to play .avi files on kubuntu

I have some .avi files from my video camera that I cannot view. I have Kaffien installed and it opens but won't play the video. Is there a better player or should I convert the file to another format?

the *best* player is djv_view. http://djv.sourceforge.net/djv_view.html If you can install it (maybe it's in the repository? if not, you can attempt to install from source), do so.

If not, vlc & mplayer are your next best bets. They should both be in the repository.

AVI is a container format which can contain one of many separate codecs, so you might find a player can play some AVIs but not all.

I use mplayer, seems to work OK for most things. I did a search in the repositories for anything to do with video and/or codec and/or avi, and installed pretty much all that I found, and mplayer seems to be happy with most formats now.

VLC is pretty good too, and I've found a few files which only play in VLC, so you might want to keep that installed too.
