What Linux version of software is most like Sigil?

I've heard Sigil is availabe on Linux but there just seems to be so many hoops (I'm new to Linux) to jump through I would much prefer to download the Linux equivalent of Sigil whatever that may be. The closest thing I've found so far is Calibre's Edit E-book. But in Sigil I can take an html file into it and convert it to epub. (I can't do that with Calibre's Edit E-book.) Granted, I can take an html and convert it to epub in Calibre (Calibre proper, not the Edit E-book offshoot) but that adds all this Calibre code, whereas Sigil adds nothing. Any ideas? Thanks.

syg00 03-02-2014 07:07 PM

I wouldn't have thought this would qualify as "jumping through hoops".
Should apply to xubuntu as well.

Gregg Bell 03-02-2014 11:33 PM

thanks but couldn't get it

Thanks for the info. It seemed terribly easy. I entered

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/sigil-git
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install sigil

in the terminal and it said something (see 049 screenshot) about whether I wanted to add the program or not and I hit enter. But then there was no Sigil program that I could find.

I dug a little deeper into the Ubuntu One that you sent (the previous question--see 050 screenshot) and entered this

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/sigil-git

Which resulted in this (see 051 screenshot).

I'm really quite new at all this. For instance, do I need to un-do any of what I've just done?

Up for any suggestions. Thanks very much for the help.

Explain further - what/how did you look, what did you get back ?. Be aware that Linux is case sensitive. Try these commands and post the results (even if none)
Code:

which sigil
dpkg -l sigil

I looked in the Ubuntu Software Center installed programs. In the Synaptic Package Manager. And in the terminal with commands such as "locate" and "find" and "tab and then find." And of course putting "sigil" after those things.

Here's the screenshot for the command you just gave me.

Re run
Code:

sudo apt-get update
and wait...
then the following will work
Code:

sudo apt-get install sigil
When finished it will be under office in your gui menu.

Larry, somehow my post thanking you didn't show up. Anyway, thank you! It worked perfectly. Only now re-visting your post (where I noticed my thanks were missing) to get Sigil on another computer, the first step ran just the way it did last time, but when I ran the second command it didn't work properly, said it couldn't find the package. (see screenshot of terminal) I ran the second command again just to be sure and when i did I got :

Unable to lock the adminsistration director... is another process using it?

Any idea what's going on and how I can get Sigil on this computer? Thanks.

13.04 is EOL, no longer supported
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

EDDY1 03-11-2014 01:16 PM

My bad you have 13.10 which is supported

larrykeenan 03-12-2014 04:14 AM

OK The purists here will hate me but Let's use the GUI.
Open Synaptic from your system menu or install it first.
Now choose Settings / Repositories / New
Then Add
Url http://ppa.launchpad.net/sunab/sigil-git/ubuntu/
Distribution saucy
Section main
Be sure the choice above is Binary and click OK

Now Click reload and wait a while then search for sigil

Right Click - Mark for install and then apply.

Much Easier...

Thanks Larry. Pretty remedial here and rarely is anything easier lol! But thanks. I did have Synpatic, opened it, clicked on Settings, then Repositories, but that took me to this screen (see screenshot 1_028). I didn't see anything "New." I figured maybe you meant the "Other Software" tab because there is an "Add" button there but wasn't sure. And I really do need detailed step-by-step instructions at this point (sorry!). (eg. How would I know to make sure my choice was binary? That sort of thing. Plus adding the url etc.) But I'm sure it'll work. Thanks!

You were using the update manager
Synaptic was the next tab over.

sundialsvcs 03-14-2014 07:25 AM

Also, when I make e-books, I wind up using Sigil and Calibre in combination.

Larry, thanks but something's off here. I open the synaptic package manager. I click on Settings. A drop down menu opens. I click on Repositories. Then I get to this screen (screenshot). And that of course is not the same screen as the "Repositories" screen you attached in your last post. (I believe it is the "Update manager" screen you referred to.) I have tried it five times with the exact same results.

Thanks sundial. I'm a little leery of using Calibre. I've heard that Kindle Direct Publishing often rejects books made with Calibre. Whereas I've never had any trouble using just Sigil. What's your experience? And how do you use Sigil and Calibre in combination?

Yep something is off alright. Please read my original reply which you quoted back.
I am returning your pic back with a green arrow and a red arrow.
Notice You are still using software updater (the green arrow.
Furthermore Synaptic is the next tab (The red arrow.)

It's wonderful to see this forum open but I notice a second updater window open as well.
Perhaps do all your updates first then close all except synaptic.

EDDY1 03-15-2014 02:09 PM

Run in terminal
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Move curser down using arrow key
Copy paste save & exit
http://ppa.launchpad.net/sunab/sigil-git/ubuntu/
Run sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install <package>

Larry, thanks. I really hope I'm not doing something embarrasingly wrong, but when I click on "Repositories" I do not get the screen you showed (attachment 101). I get this screen (screenshot 102). So when I click on "Repositories" instead of getting the "Repositories" window I am getting the "Software and Updates" window.

I wasn't updating anything. (I don't know how!) It's like I'm missing the Repositories window. And the second update window was just what Xubuntu sends me to update the OS. I just hadn't downloaded it yet. And I closed out of everything but Synaptic and tried the whole process over again and got the exact same results.

Eddy, thanks. So this will get me Sigil from the terminal? I just need a little clarification though. I get this part:

Run in terminal
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

But then this:

Move curser down using arrow key
Copy paste save & exit
http://ppa.launchpad.net/sunab/sigil-git/ubuntu/

I'm not so sure about. So I move the curser down to http://ppa.launchpad.net/sunab/sigil-git/ubuntu/. Right? Then I copy it. Okay. But where am I pasting it? And how am I exiting?

Lastly:

Run sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install <package>

Are these two separate commands?

Thanks.

EDDY1 03-15-2014 06:56 PM

Nice video but it's already in your sources.list, it would be nicer if you would the the OP how to add a repo using same technique.

EDDY1 03-15-2014 07:00 PM

Ok I did notice that there is a radio icon that says "NEW"
But also in order for the new repo to be available you have to select "Reload".

I did exactly what you did, but when I left-click on "Repositories" in the drop-down menu, the "Software and Updates" window opens instead of a "Repositories" window. On the tabs (of the "Software and Updates" window)though when I click on the "other software" tab I get this (see screenshot, which I maximized), which is similar to your "Repositories" screen but not the same. I don't know what's going on, but this is where it stands.

EDDY1 03-16-2014 12:02 AM

Do you think that because you don't have canniocal checked in sources.list that that is why you don' get your dependencies met?

Eddy, I'm so new I don't know what should be chekced or unchecked, and I didn't even know that I didn't have my dependencies met. But I mean, this is the synaptic package manager. I had to click on several things to get to that software & updates screen, are you supposed to have to do that to use synaptic package manager? (It seems pretty complicated if you are, and it would seem there would be some kind of notification saying you should to it.) Thanks.

Hi there

Let's try another way. Download an unofficial debian package.
You can then install it with either your GUI or follow instructions on page.
Then mark this thread solved.
Please accept my apology for getting you to try the gui.

Thanks Larry. I actually saw that page a long time ago but didn't know what to do with it. I won't be on the computer that needs Sigil till tomorrow, but when I get on I'll give it a shot.

Tried to do it from the command line. No luck. (See screenshot 41). Was going to download the file (Sigil-0.7.4-Linux_x86.deb) and then try to install it from the Synaptic Package Manager, but figured it would be better to install it from the terminal and ask you about it first.

EDDY1 03-20-2014 12:23 AM

Unless you downloaded the file to your Desktop, you're in the wrong directory. You should be in Downloads directory.
You can also go to Downloads in filemanager, locate the .deb file, right-click on it & select "Open With Gdebi".
Can you open a terminal & post the output of
Quote:

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/...buntu-via-ppa/

Hey EDDY. Downloaded

Sigil-0.7.2-Linux_x86.deb

Found the file in the File Manager and right clicked on it. The options for opening were:

-open in ubuntu software center
-open with Archive Manager

I chose "other application" but there was no Gdebi in it.

EDDY, I ran this command. It ran. Here's the result (see screenshot). I assume the command was to get Sigil, but if I have Sigil, I can't find it. I've looked in Downloads, the applications menu, synaptic package manager, Ubuntu Software Center, run "find" and "locate" in the terminal. Is it somewhere else or do I not have it? And please remember I'm totally new at this--if you could flesh things out a bit, it would be appreciated. And if this last command did not install Sigil, can you tell me how to remove what was installed. Thanks.

You installed gdebi, right-click on the file you want to install, select open with gdebi & it will install for you as long as it's a .deb
