Question?

What is known to be the most user friendly, useful, reliable yet smallest version of linux that can be used from a memory stick.

try damn small linux (DSL),only 50mb. I've never had a memory stick to play with, but i've booted many different boxes with it and it never failed to recognize the hardware, even fairly new boxes

You could try puppy linux also. I think that's designed to be booted off a flash drive.
