The one I like the best is K3b. As someone very new to Linux I found it incredibly easy to set up and use. There might be a better one out there, but for me this was the best.

I like to use mkisofs and cdrecord directly. Linux-udf is pretty nice too if you don't mind patching your kernel.

xcdroast.

There is only one software package for burning in linux - cdrtools - everything else is nothing but a GUI frontend to those tools, what you need to do is try all the frontends untill you find one that you like, I used to use xcdroast but now I use k3b for when I'm in X, in the console I use a couple of scripts I found on the net to automate the process.

Aussie is right -- most of the "programs" are just GUI's for one or two programs.

I am using K3B because

(a) I use KDE as my desktop and it integrates well
(b) What it does (and how it does it) seems to be a subset of Nero in windows which I am used to using, so it is easy for me.
(c) It does Data CDs, Music CDs and VCDs which are all I require.
(d) As it is part of KDE, you can be sure that, as the "background" programs improve and increase, KDE will keep K3B up with it.

To get the best from K3B as a Mandrake user visit the Penguin Liberation Front at http://plf.zarb.org and follow the link for "easy" setup of Software Sources. Ensure you include PLF and Texstar at the very least. You will find extra tools that integrate with K3B.

The actual full site from my last post is:

http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/

This helps you set up your Software sources manager with loads of extra sources!

Amongst what you'll find are the "recommended" programs on the left tab of page 2 of the K3B setup. Load VCDtools and Transcode and you will make most of these available. The only thing you won't find this way is eMovix.

Don't forget the Linux UDF project.

Does anyone know which programs do sound normalization when creating a music CD. I believe the very latest version of K3B is implementing this, tho not fully?

k3b, supports my 52x burner pretty well :)
k3b >= nero
