Actually, the kernel is Linux, and Linux is the kernel. The rest is GNU and other open software.

The role of the kernel is to provide access to hardware and to coordinate the various processes on your system.

IBM had a really good name for it: SCP = System Control Program. Because that, in essence, is what "the kernel" actually does. It controls the system hardware.

A easy way to understand is
The Kernal or kernel is the Engine that drives the Train all other software is like the carriages that run behind.

The kernel is the main switchboard, as well as master control--all commands go through the kernel.

You might find the Interactive Kernel Map useful.

Any OS has a kernel. In Windows, it is called "ntoskrnl.exe."
