What is the replacement for sizeof() in the third argument for IOCTL commands

In 2.6 kernel documentation, it is mentioned not to use sizeof() for the third argument in IOCTL commands...
e.g. #define PUT_MSG _IOW(magic_number, 1, sizeof(struct))
now in this, what is the replacement for sizeof()?

should it be size_t? or something else?
help me...
