What is the equivelent of lilo -R with grub?

What is the equivelent of lilo -R with grub?

I am trying to upgrade my kernel remotely from c source and I want it to only try booting with the new kernel once, so if it doesn't work I can remote reboot the server and it will use the old kernel that was working.

How can I do that?
