Applications installed from RPMs are usually installed under the /usr/ hierarchy. Binary executables in /usr/bin, library files under /usr/lib. There are also man files installed.

You shouldn't need to define a link because these locations are in your paths. If you are curious, you can use the rpm command to list the files supplied by a package.

For example for xmms on SuSE Linux: rpm -q --filesbypkg xmms
Code:
xmms /media/xmms_audio_cd
xmms /usr/bin/wmxmms
xmms /usr/bin/xmms
xmms /usr/share/applications/xmms.desktop
xmms /usr/share/applications/xmms_audio_cd.desktop
xmms /usr/share/applications/xmms_enqueue.desktop
xmms /usr/share/doc/packages/xmms
xmms /usr/share/doc/packages/xmms/AUTHORS
xmms /usr/share/doc/packages/xmms/COPYING
xmms /usr/share/doc/packages/xmms/ChangeLog
xmms /usr/share/doc/packages/xmms/FAQ
xmms /usr/share/doc/packages/xmms/INSTALL
xmms /usr/share/doc/packages/xmms/NEWS
xmms /usr/share/doc/packages/xmms/README
xmms /usr/share/doc/packages/xmms/README.3dse
xmms /usr/share/man/man1/wmxmms.1.gz
xmms /usr/share/man/man1/xmms.1.gz
xmms /usr/share/pixmaps/xmms.png
xmms /usr/share/xmms
xmms /usr/share/xmms/Skins
xmms /usr/share/xmms/Skins/xmmsuse-1.0-1.tar.bz2
xmms /usr/share/xmms/Skins/xmmsuse_blue-1.2-2.tar.gz
xmms /usr/share/xmms/wmxmms.xpm
In this case, the library files are installed from a second "xmms-lib" package.
