I don't understand the question.

and that is because I didn't explain myself properly
The application is contained in a cd which can either be "installed" (which seems to simply copy the files to C:/program files- in my case, this is within wine) or run live. To operate it within linux, I open an html file from the windows version of firefox. I do this, as it seems to be the easiest way to get shockwaveplayer.
Everything then behaves as a webpage, images, hyperlinks, etc. (This didn't work within native firefox/iceweasel.) There is one exception- a link to the website of a well known publication. AFAICT a simple bookmark does exactly the same thing, but I'm not entirely sure about this, as I can't understand the .html file (and of course I assume that I can't post it due to copyright).
Searching aroung for reasons why clicking on this hyperlink does nothing, I found
http://www.macromedia.com/support/do...manager04.html . The disk contains some documentation, indicating that the adobe flashplayer settings manager should "trust" the address c:/// or, running the live cd, d:///.
The c:/// option didn't work, but I wondered whether a "real" linux location rather than a virtual w$ one might be needed- the full path would be easy enough- or should I specify my entire /home/<user> directory?
(Or find a workaround outside this software?) Thanks
