You might try Tiny Me or Puppy. If you have 128 meg of ram either should boot. If you have 64 meg you may have to go to an older version of either Puppy, Tiny Me or Tiny Core.

Once upon a time, I ran Puppy Linux on an NEC laptop with an AMD K6-300 CPU and 64MB of RAM. Worked better then Win98.

Not sure what the problem is - Puppy's installer should just work, although it has changed a bit over the years. Which version of Puppy are you using?

Puppy will be fine, if it's the 400MHz and 256MB model — it would be OK if you had 128MB. Get version 4.3, because 5.0 is rather experimental.
