think of an rpm to kinda being the equivalent of an *.exe file in windows...when you get these files, you can simply double click them to install them, or if you open up your terminal you can type:
rpm -ivh packagename.rpm
also if you open up your terminal you can read up on what an rpm is by typing:
man rpm

lol thx for you input morton....it was a example of an rpm package as opposed to what rpm is in itself...
and in lamens terms for someone new, yes they are somewhat like an exe....thats the closest to an exe you are going to get, you double click it and it installs....and thats a good enough example, to give somone an idea on what it is...
