what is needed, what is best for Gnome and KDE?
 

hello, I'm discarding my mom's computer and installing debian(3.0rc) on it, but I have no Idea if I'm going to have KDE or gnome on it.. suggestions? (the computer is also going to function as a apache server, therefor debian)

What kernel(?.?.?-???) do you suggest for the job, KDE or Gnome, and which version?

Well in woody you won't have many choices it's going to be an at least 3 year old version of kde or gnome then :P Well depending on the specs I'd rather go for some lighter window manager like fluxbox or something.

I recomend not to use Woody, because it's very outdated.
You'd better use Sarge, it's at least as stable as Woody, and it'll be officialy stable at the end of the moth.
So Sarge is very up-to-date and still stable.

The kernel you should use depends on the system. I'm using the 2.6 kernel, because it's the newest.
If you're runing a pentium processor you'd better use the 2.6-i686 version because it's optimised for the pentiums, the 2.6-k6 kernel is optimised for amd processors. You can easely install a new kernel (at least if you do it directly after the installation of debian) just select the kernel-image you want with dselect and install it. But maybe others know more, I'm quite new to this.

If the computer is only running as server (so no other things like surfing the web, or text-editting) I recomend to not use a dm/wm because it uses unnecisary system-recources. If you still want to use one (for the setup) use a light one, like xfce or even fluxbox or windowmaker or similar.

I'll take a look at it.. I got this problem that the computer just turns off after some minutes :s I can't find the error..

Is it a software problem? What are you running now, linux? Or could it be from overheating too?
