What is a terminal tool for searching through it with more visual ease?

I'v seen a terminal tool somewhere for windows that allows you to move through the terminal as though it were the files folder. Very easy to use as visually obvious. What can I use like this for Ubuntu?

Midnight Commander (mc) for use in terminal or GUI.

(EmelFM, similar to mc, for a GUI tool.)

Both the above are copies of Norton Commander which was very popular in the days of DOS.
