What is a good free video editor?

I am a :newbie: and need help with the following:
What is a good video editing program thats opensource or free?
I'll be needing it for editing AVI and MPG files between 1MB-1GB. Something that lets you set audio bit-rate, frames per sec., quality, the works.
Any answers will be apreciated.
Thanks in advance.:D

VirtualDub is awesome. Unfortunately, it's for Windows only. Really, Windows have better software when it comes to encoding audio/video.

Thanks for the links!:D
I've tried VirtualDub, but it just does not work for me. To complicated (in my humble opinion), and i did not like the iterface. By the way, as you said, it's only for M$win.

P.S. continue with the posts!:)

"CinePaint is painting and retouching software primarily used for motion picture frame-by-frame retouching and dust-busting. It has been used on many feature films, including THE LAST SAMURAI where it was used to add flying arrows. CinePaint is different from other painting tools because it supports deep color depth image formats up to 32-bit per channel deep. For comparison, GIMP is limited to 8-bit, and Photoshop to 16-bit."

talk about a heavy editor... i am hoping it will work for smaller stuff on a much less robust system then a dual CPU with 4G ram.

4GB is not what I have, only 512MB (notice the difference:cool: ). It looks cool and all, BUT its req. are WAY to high.
