what if I tried to run Virtualbox within Virtualbox?

I am just about finished making an updated custom copy of my distro in a Virtualbox machine. The last thing I thought of installing before taking a snapshot is...Virtualbox. Then I wondered: hypothetically, what will happen if I try to run Virtualbox inside the virtual machine? I'd rather first see if anyone else has tried it, because I'm guessing it will just crash the virtual machine (or make it run so slowly, for using too much of the memory, that I get exasperated and forcibly shut it down). Not that there would be any reason to run Virtualbox inside Virtualbox.

If you have enough RAMs, I don't see why it wouldn't work. You would likely need to devote at least four (six would be better) GB to the VM so you could devote at least two GB, ideally three, to the VB within the VM so you can have a VM within the VB.

If you have enough RAMs, give it a whirl and report back.

Heck, I'm tempted to try it myself, but not tonight. It's late in these parts and I have to get up in the morning.

Location: Earth? I would say I hope so but I'm not so sure about that... I could just be a figment of your imagination too.
Distribution: Currently OpenMandriva. Previously openSUSE, PCLinuxOS, CentOS, among others over the years.

Alright I'm game. I just fired up Tiny Core Linux in a Virtualbox VM within a VM and it worked sorta...

It did actually boot Tiny Core in VM within a VM, but well... have a look at the screenshot I took.
(I didn't think it would work at all but)

KVM supports nested virtualization. If you tell KVM to expose the physical CPU to the guest, you can run another KVM inside the guest with little performance loss.

What is it good for? Run a cloud on virtual machines, for example.

I've tried it with vmware. It worked. But virtualbox I don't know.

I installed VirtualBox to a VM of Ubuntu and was able to install VirtualBox. Then I started running into problems.

Even though it's a 64-bit VM, I could select only 32-bit kernels in VB. Then, when I tried to TinyCore 32-bit, it stalled at the "booting the kernel" message.

I haven't been able to do much more, but figured I'd add this ingredient to the pie.
