What gnome libraries do I need to...
 

I am using Slackware and since it no longer comes with Gnome I am having a problem using some of the gnome-based apps that I like, such as Gthumb and Grip. Is there some standard set of libraries I can download and install that will solve these problematic dependency issues? It would be nice to be able to run any application from KDE without going through the list of missing requirements. Is there such a convenience or should I just install Freerock or Dropline? Any suggestions are welcome.

Well, I think I have decided to just install Dropline again. I like Dropline based on past experiences anyway and it will clear up any of the dependency issues I might encounter. I may even start using it full-time again, depending on how well it works...

If I were installing any version of Gnome just to meet dependencies I'd probably go with Freerock over Dropline. Chances are much less that a critical fix will be required with Freerock, simply because it replaces and installs fewer packages. With Dropline you'd have to be more careful to update both Slack and DLG.

Of course if you're planning on switching to Gnome then DLG is probably the best bet.

Yeah, I'll go with DLG. That should work out fine but I will say that this dependency issue is definitely something that would keep a non-linux user from making the switch. Linux has come a long way but it still has a very long way to go before luring in the average user.

Just to update this thread - I have installed Dropline-Gnome and it definitely solved all of my problems related to those dependencies. Plus, it seems to be a good GUI. For the sole sake of getting some other packages, this is a good idea for any Slack user, IMHO.

Of course the average user doesn't use Slack, and thus doesn't have the dependency issues.
