What else do I need to do to move websites......

Hello,
I want to move peoples websites under their /home/$user/public_html/domain name directory. If I do that will they still be able to run cgi in their cgi-bin and will php still work,

Also I recently backedup all websites and reformatted (was having problems, I decided to make the 2nd drive hdb as /home does that mean that all new users I create will be put on hdb now? What percussions does this mean for me?

If the permissions, etc are all okay, then yes, it should work.

However, there is one small caveat I should point out, which caused a problem for me once when I was trying to do something similar: In PHP, there is a standard variable called $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'], which contains the directory name of the server's Web root -- typically this would be something like /srv/www/htdocs/. Some web programs rely on this to work out the path to access other files in the site, by adding the configured path name to the DOCUMENT_ROOT... but this doesn't work if you're using user/public_html folders, as these aren't in the document root.

It all gets a bit messy at that point, so the basic answer to your question is yes, but check if any programs are using DOCUMENT_ROOT, and make sure they still work.

Hope that helps

Yup, I just found out the hard way phpMyAdmin refused to run, so PHP is a problem and I've got a few sites on here that run php driven sites.

Maybe to keep it more organized by name I'll go with /srv/www/htdocs/$username/domain_name_www/ as each sites root directory, then I'll know if Im looking for a specific users sites where they will be. That will also give the user the ability to have something that is not available by a browser on his site, but can still get to it via ftp if he/she needs to.

Thank you for your reply.

I'm moving this thread to Linux-Software since it's more of
an Apache question than Linux-related.

Is there anything I can do to PHP to make it so that the $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] in php is changed to /home? Webmin's Virtual min requires changing apaches webroot to /home but I have no idea how to go about doing that and still have all the modules that are loaded in the stock load of apache 2 through yast in suse 9.3 pro.
