what e-mail application do you like?
I've had RH9 for about 2 weeks; just getting used to it. Still use Win98 for my real work, at least for now. I use PocoMail for Windows.
My mind boggles at the variety of e-mail applications installed with linux. So far I have tried Mozilla 1.4; Kmail; Evolution; and Sylpheed. Looking for opinions: what e-mail application do you use, and why do you like it? Thanks. |

email clone....
a program by the name of Ximian Evolution, looks just like Outlook/Outlook Express...but without all the security problems....included w/RH 9

i use kmail...its simple and easy, and isn't cluttered with useless stuff..

mozilla thunderbird as stated above ... superb program (firebird is also great, for browsing that is ;))

Ximian Evolution is my choice mail program for now.. I have used the mail program within Mozilla, and I would consider getting firebird and thunderbird in the future If I wanted to upgrade my browser!

You know there are so many different mail programs for linux, I wonder if there is a linux guru that has used them ALL!

i know i used all that ryan said, including pine mentioned by paulg, and my final decision was to stick with kmail...

My final decision was for kmail too. Mutt is good for system mail.
Why kmail? Coming from windoze, I wanted something similar to Eudora, where I can check as many email boxes as I have at any time. |

IMHO,
- thunderbird (mozilla) sticks to the netscape mail(4.x) "prehistoric-user-friendlyness" / gui design model....and does NOT do the job ...(not as I want/need.... however Firebird stays, the 1st "reasonable" (mozilla based) browser implementatiton)... - pine is great for imap checking (turns to a nightmare if you are still reliaying on POP3 account(s)...("some" people still do...) - Sylpheed inherits GTK gui pro/cons (question of taste ;o) - don't know about Kmail, evolution, etc... IMH objective conclusion: "mail" (even mutt) stays the most reliable console solution, for "local" mailbox checking (external mail retrieving has to be performed by some MTA daemon depending your account(s) settings) While email is still the most widely used method for Internet messaging, it's really a pity that nobody has ever started any "serious email" client project for multi-platforms linux, @ least in the console world... (something small, light, fast, not depending on cryptic libs/lang add-on, that does pop3/imap, with a well integrated address book! available under "compatible" binary/source form...) Sometimes, I was dreaming about making the perfect mail client based on vim, but I gave up...(vim has no programming lang standard, but a slooow/ cryptic scripting engine, reason why it is so small and efficient as editor ;o) Peace, Boob -- Slackware 9 on most boxes Ps: your constructive suggestions/opinions are welcome ;o) |
I use both kmail and the mozilla email client. I like kmail.
The only thing I don't like about it is that I cannot turn off the preview pane. Since I run with HTML support disabled, this isn't a huge deal though. During the recent sobig outbreak, several of my commercial email boxes were getting 2-3 copies of sobig a minute. I discovered that kmail included server-side filtering, which made it perfectly simple to identify and kill sobig without ever downloading it. |
I use whatever comes on the machine.. It is a hassel trying to get programs to run on linux.. or it is when you are a newbie and you Extracter is not working right and you are having to do everything in the terminal.. I used to install every package that came with linux, yet there is so much now I had to leave out the server stuff (Which I would have never used on this certain box) a bummer because the more programs that come on the next release of linux the less I will be able to get, unless I get me a bigger HD right now I have a 9gig HD, and I never thought you could fill it with just linux software.. Its odd..
Anyways because I am getting off topic I shall go.. |
