What dock is the best...in gnome?
Hi, i am looking into getting a dock, kind of like mac's dock in OS X etc. but i don't know which one to get, i am running ubuntu feisty fawn, with gnome. Also, what are your experiences using docks? Thanks,
|
I don't know whether Gnome has anything like a docker. The only one I ever tried on Gnome was KDE-related (kxdocker), it does fit in with the Os X style.

I installed KXDOCKER, but when i try to launch it i get this.

And I am still open to suggestion of other docks, thanks, |
Hmm, if you are running Gnome exclusively, that may be all the explanation you need. KXdocker does depend on certain KDE components: KDE libs, KDE base and QT. It's highly unlikely (and that's an understatement) it will work without them. I just checked their home page and they do mention that porting to Gnome is still a future project. In the meantime, you would have to install at least parts of KDE to get it working. Personally, I have both KDE and Gnome set up. Although I use Gnome most of the time, I think it's just great because I can KDE apps from Gnome, some of which are just as good if not better than the Gnome equivalents. Maybe have a look at their home page yourself, they have a few snappy screenshots:

Ok, thanks... i have tried kiba-docker and it seems pretty cool, though it is not as smooth as others like rocket dock in windows. Thanks, if anyone knows of a really smooth dock please let me know... is kxdocker smooth ? I know smooth is hard to define but i am talking about something that just looks and runs really neat. Thanks,

Kooldock is nice, too, but again it is a KDE thing. As I said, I doubt whether Gnome has any docker at all. Same goes for superKaramba. If you're really into the eye-candy part, you should ask yourself whether you really prefer Gnome.
|
Woah, did you just say that gnome can't do candy? I'm not even going to get into that... but that post was misleading. Anyway. try gdesklets. Once you get it, go to toolbars/launchers, and try starter bar. It's nothing too special - just the basic zoom and launch, but kiba is far too buggy for me. It's not in the realm of stardock or mac os, but it works.

Since I'm using Gnome most of the time, there wouldn't be any interest in misrepresenting it, would there? I'd just like you to show me the Gnome equivalent of something like KxDocker. Just follow the link I posted above to see what I mean. Or look at superKaramba. I know that Gnome can give you things like Compiz and all - but so can KDE. I meant to refer to the extras. |
gdesklets may not have the variety of choices of superkarambas themes, but the technology is there - hopefully more people will develop for it. I will definitely admit superkaramba has some pretty sexy ones. As far as the KXDocker, I'll have to reboot into SusSe to try it out, (as my Ubuntu is for gnome only...) but as far as I can see from the movie, it doesn't look too far removed from the gdesklets starter bar. Once you have a functional dock with some fair animations, it's all just icon choice. The gdesklets starter bar may not be as fluid and smooth as KXDoxker - I can't really tell from the movie. I will check it out though. Thanks.

Also, if you're using beryl, check out bdock.
|
ok, bdock, will check it out, but out of curiosity do you know of a site that has info about bdock? screenshots etc. if not no problem just wondering. Thanks for all the suggestions,

Mitchell7man-
I'm going to reboot into linux so I can check the repos for bdock. I'm not finding anything instantly rewarding through my searches. I would much rather see a decent screenshot over a friggin' novel. But for now, here's some info I found on other projects. First and foremost - Avant Window Navigator. I haven't used it. I am not sure if it can operate like a launcher, or if it really just a pretty task manager. http://code.google.com/p/avant-window-navigator/ Cairo-dock. I think it's dead. The cairo-clock is alive and well, but the dock seems to have been left behind. I could be wrong. EDIT - SEE NEXT POST - I think cairo (now udock) is the best bet. http://macslow.thepimp.net/?p=61 Here are the sources for bdock... but no screens. Labled as Fedora extras http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/se...hp?query=bdock BTW, Jay73 - I tried xqde, the replacement for KDocker. I would put it at the level of The gdesklets starter bar, maybe half a step above. I think kiba is the best one I've tried (on linux) but it has problems. Maybe in future releases they will get over the novelty of absurd physics effects, and cut the fat so there is a truly usable dock. |
I was wrong. cairo-dock is alive and... well? It's called udock now... or Gnomedock... or Universal Dock - depending on where you look. Looks like macslow made a few bucks. It's still free, though.
http://www.gnome-dock.org/trac here are some recently posted files. http://code.google.com/p/udock/downloads/list Here's something else. I think it's ugly though http://beatnik.infogami.com/Gimmie I have not tried any of these. I'm just giving you some options. I think udock and avant look the best. I'll try some out today. |
Ok, thanks,

Are you aware there is currently a thread running in the "General" section where people are posting and comparing their desktops? Have a look and I'm sure you could pick up a few good ideas.
