What do I do with a buildroot disk image?

I have produced an embedded linux system using buildroot, and have a disk image, but I can't figure out how to write it to the disk. I was able to write it superblock, but my embedded device can't boot from that. When I used dd to write it to the first partition, after creating one roughly the size of the disk image, the only way I could mount it was by mounting the device as a loop-back. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.
