What codecs for Debian/Ubuntu to use for playing MP4?

you will have to google for the w32codec for debian, they are typically in a non-free repository that you add to your apt sources list.

It depends. MP4 is a container format. It could contain a number of codecs. quicktime, mpeg4, h264, and others. Media info should provide more details on the perceived content of the video that you're trying to play. mplayer -identify or ffmpeg -i or ffprobe or others as well.

you are right because w32codecs didnt help

Since you use debian, the ffmpeg provided in the repository was most likely built with all the non-free codecs disabled. The MP4 file you are trying to play most likely needs a nonfree codec.
You can download it here: http://ffmpeg.org/ and try building it with --enable-nonfree
Alternatively, you could use VLC Media Player since it has all the codecs builtin

How about you post a link to the video you need to play?.
I've found between Mplayer and Vlc very little i can't play.
