What Application for Compiled HTML
 

I have a couple files that are books with a *.chm extension. In windows, you just click on them and they open up. Properties says they are compiled HTML. So far, I have not been able to find an application in Linux that will open them. Linux based web browsers just ask me to pick an application for this extension. Wine wants an executable. Am I going to have to download IE in order to run these under Linux? Has anyone dealt with these files before?

LQ has a search function, looking for chm yields some threads with clues, here's three apps: Kchmviewer, GnoCHM and XCHM.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't aware of the search feature. I'll check those out. As far as what compiled HTML is, I have not idea. But, that was the description I got when I did a right click on the file and looked at the properties to see if it would give me some clues. It does seem to go along with the *.chm file extension.

Compiled HTML = .chm file(in Microsoft parlance)

if you mean 'to find an application in Linux that will open them', kchmviewer will do the work.

Found the kchmviewer this morning and installed it on the laptop. Works great. Thanks again.

A bit of googling (something I should have done in the first place :-() shows that compiled HTML is the file format that MS uses for help files.
