There's a veritable STACK of similar threads on the subject , including at least one MEGAthread if I remember right.
Did you search/read other threads about the various options?

I believe that the bulk of these Linux "anti-virus" products are targeted at Linux mailservers that are serving mail to Windows machines.

In general, because of the fact that Linux users don't sign in as root (like Windows users do), and because 99.999% of the malware out there is designed for Windows, we just don't see malware on Linux desktops. That's not to say that Linux is invulnerable, though - just that the risks are different. If you are a desktop user, chances are that you'll never have a problem with malware - especially if you run rkhunter and chkrootkit from time to time. If you run a server, since you're not hidden behind a firewall, you'll be subject to the usual server attacks where people try to install a root kit or otherwise gain control of your machine. Server owners face such challenges that they probably should go to the Linux Security forum and at least start by looking through the sticky topics.

NOTE that I am most definitely not a security resource.

Clamav makes sense to use, as it works also on Windows - there is even a GUI version for Windows called clamwin. As already noted, using AV software on Linux makes mostly sense on mail servers. For professional mailservers you need a lot of special measures for security, not only AV programs. Quite a lot of newcomers to Linux simply request AV software, because they are used to the illusion of security that is provided by commercial Windows-based AV applications. They require this kind of Placebo-effect!
