Porting to linux has given my outdated + fairly ok hardware new purposes, now I have a whole little home domain running, web/FTP/mail/file server and all... ! great OS , I must say !

Having achieved this I want to make a better web page than a simple text documents with links

Since I don't know much about coding (yet?) , I've tried different programs to build me a web page, nvu, mozilla composer and a few more...


Anyway, off to the topic : Recommandations ! Let's hear it, what do you use, and why !

I don't think there's any reason to use more than just a trusty old text editor. So my site is written in perl and html using just vi. I think the tools you've already mentioned are the most common graphical editors, but I prefer to be more hands on and do it the old fashioned way. I like to be in control.

And some day, I will probably agree

If I knew how to write a web page in vi/m or another editor, I guess anything else would seem like bloat..
so I'm getting there, but I really like the WYSIWYG approach for learning code. Make a table in nvu and then see what I should have typed in HTML for instance...

Nvu, btw, is probably the best I have come across so far.

Regarding code, any thoughts of HTML vs. PHP ? (yes, I am a curious person)

I've never tried PHP, but the syntax looks fairly similar to perl, only more specific to web site creation rather than general purpose like perl. I use perl on my site because it means I can have a menu at the top of every page and only have to edit one file should I need to change that menu. Then the relevant html page just gets loaded beneath the menu. The same is possible in PHP, of course.

Bluefish is nice and I use it quite often to tab between different files, but otherwise I don't really go for all-singing-all-dancing editors. Something fairly basic means you don't rely on the program doing the work for you. But, it's nice to have syntax highlighting, showing the nested loops, etc. rather than straight through vim which I use to quickly make changes on a running site.

I really liked nvu, but since SuSE yanked it from their distro I've reverted back to just using vi.

Seems it's the best to learn code as fast as possible.. I'll check out bluefish too ! Thanks for all replies

i'm a bluefish user, i hate nvu.. ilove the wysiwyg and preiview mode however it annoyse me because it does the escape encoding for special characters which i usei n my php code like &'s in my embeded url's etc.. nvu will always screw with them... right now i have to use nvu in co-op with bluefish, nvu to see where in the template a designer gives to me i should put my php code, its so annoying, i wish there was a php dev app thathad wysiwyg mode, gonna check out gendesign heard its as close as it gets (esp because its a gnome app i gotta check it i, hate kde)

My favourite web development tool is Quanta. I like the CSS editor and the syntax highlighting for many languages (some not even used for web development). I don't use a text editor because developing a site would be a long and cumbersome as well as error prone process.
