Hi
I have been using Apt w/Synaptic for the past 5 months or so on a regular basis and have never had any problems with it but yesterday when I attempted to update the list of repositories, it kept stalling. This went on for awhile and so I finally gave up on it.
When I came back to it a few hours later, it not only sucessfully updated the list of repositories but when I looked down at the bottom, I could see that instead of saying something like "792 out of 1,201 packages installed" it now said "792 out of 4,832 packages installed.
So I was like OMG!!. I immediately began surfing through the package lists to see if I had indeed picked up several thousand additional packages and much to my delight, I had
.
However, it looks like many of these are old "X" packages and old dependancies which often conflict with the newer ones installed on the system (I use Fedora Core 1#/Gnome). Many of the ones I installed or attempted to install look like old DOS or CGA games from the early 80's. Other times, I would try to install a package and it would refuse because there was some sort of conflict or the package I was trying to install required some very old library. Other times synaptic would crash or pop up a message telling me that I had two of the same file and if I tried to go into "preferences" in the menu, it would crash big-time!.
Please don't think I'm complaining. I'm just very curious what is going on all of a sudden with all these new packages and stuff. Is there a major update going on at the moment that I'm unaware of and where can I get info on this?.
Thank's - Confused
