What's there in suse in place of "service" command in redhat??

hi everyone ,
I used to work on redhat-9 till yesterday , i installed suse-8 on my system yesterday . I was amazed to found out that there was no sevice command in that . i want to work on mysql ,i have already installed the pacakege now i want to run it . The problem its given is "not able to connect to /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock " .I would like to know how to eradicate this prb. . Also i want to configure Apache server for php applications., plz help me in that also.

Basically service does this:
service ftpd start
Is the same as typing
/etc/rc.d/init.d/ftpd start

This only works if Suse uses SystemV Init scripts. If you have a directory /etc/init.d or /etc/rc.d/init.d then it should work.
