What's recommended for dialing in to shell account?

I have a old-style shell account (among other things)
I love this shell account. Currently I've been using
Minicom to connect to it. I've been unable to get
this to work when logged in as an ordinary user.

My question in this forum is:
What's recommended for this? I prefer the
text only type connection (really have a hard time
using a mouse.) and something I can get to work on
1. Linux - recommend specific distro if you wish
and 2. as a user! TIA. O.

That is probably a problem with the permissions on the serial port.
Set the port world readable and writeable and you may be able to use minicom with user permissions. , dev/ttyS0 is Com1 etc

Hmm, set the port world readable and writable. OK
I did Now I get this msg "cannot open lock file" (approx)
it wants a lock file in /var/lock Make that
rw for the world too? ??? Must be a better way.
