What's a good lightweight GUI based browser?
 

I'm running xfree86 3.3.6 on a craptastic compaq LTE elite 4/75C

I need to find a web browser that will feel reasonably zippy on this boat anchor. Netscape takes about five minutes to initialize and Mozilla isn't much better.

I've grown tired of text based browsing, but so far links is the only browser responsive enough for consideration.

http://packages.gentoo.org/packages/?category=net-www has a list of web browsers. Even if you don't use gentoo, browsing this package list will give you links to web browser projects. Personally, I use mozilla so I can't recommend anything, but good luck with your search.

Ya might want to check out Dillo http://www.dillo.org .Its not real big on features but its very light (source is 365kb) and lightning quick.

but here's the acid test.... will it run quick enough on a 75mhz 486?? hehehe.

I'm waiting for fluxbox to compile, and then I'll test out dillo.

I kinda love firebird.

Its made by mozilla/netscape ppl,but it is ungodly fast in comparison too the former.

It should, I've seen it in action on a 90Mhz pent. classic... Very zippy.

What I get from reading their web page is that dillo is striving to be in strict compliance with standards.

I like it too on my desktop machine... But my 300Mhz laptop dosen't ...Kinda doggish

From my experience,
Dillo is fast but doens't like some sites, like this on.
go with either Firebird or Opera

well, dillo is acceptably fast on my 75mhz 486... not blazing, but acceptable. Much faster than waiting for mozilla to load!

As far as the initial loading, I haven't seen any other GUI application start up as quickly as this on my 333...quite impressive.

The newer versions of the Links web browser (not Lynx!!) supports a graphical mode under X or svga mode. It works surprisingly well - I'd compare it to dillo in its ability to render pages, perhaps even a bit better. Download and screenshots can be found at the developer's page:
