wget does not honour timeouts?

I'm using wget with --timeout=15 option, but sometimes it doesn't seem to comply, and waits forever for some files.
Does anyone confirm that, and/or suggest a workaround?
OS is debian sarge. wget is "GNU wget 1.10.2".
