Weird USB issues with WinXP + Mandrake 9.1

Hi everyone

I have some weird USB issues with Windows XP (non-SP1) and Mandrake 9.1. PC has an MSI K7N2 Delta ILSRS motherboard (with nForce2 chipset).

When I boot directly to Windows, NONE of my USB devices work. No error, no IRQ conflicts, nothing. Windows thinks everything is just fine. But, no USB for me.

When I boot to Mandrake, everything works fine. No errors, nothing.

And now comes the weird part. If I reboot from Linux, and choose Windows in lilo, Windows suddenly has some USB. It takes a good while before it starts recognizing stuff, and it isn't hot-pluggable anymore. But usually, the mouse will work.

So what on Earth is going on here? How could Linux interfere with Windows? Is lilo responsible?

One last thing: Linux seems to use USB 2.0 to connect, because when I disabled 2.0 in the BIOS, Linux didn't have USB either. But since XP non-SP1 can only do USB 1.1 (and it always did before I installed Linux)... could that have something to do with anything?

Well, guess the best way to solve it would be to delete Linux and lilo and get back to Windows only. But if any of you have the slightest clue of what might be going on here....

Why not install XP SP1 (and other updates) to see if that solves the problem?

Same exact problem - thank you for verifying this as an issue (different mobo tho)

I also haven't installed SP1, though that shouldn't matter.

I suspect that the culprit is LILO somehow..... but I'm a noob

I haven't found many people with the same problems, but there seem to be similar issues with linux (or lilo) messing about with IRQ settings.

How that works, or why Windows is bothered by it, even *after* removing lilo and linux, is beyond me.

I still have no USB. I guess the only way to fix it is to do a completely clean install of XP.

Hooray for Mandrake
