Weird Trackpad behavior

This is on an HP dv7t-7000 series laptop running Mint 15 (Olivia):

The behavior of the mouse pointer (using the trackpad -- haven't tried an actual mouse) is strange. It "bounces" under some circumstances -- e.g., in Firefox, it is well behaved if I just mouse across the screen, but it bounces noticeably if I mouse across a button (don't notice it much for links). In openxcom, the behavior is extremely "bouncy" -- I can never count on the cursor staying where I put it.

Some of this may just be that the cursor-tracking isn't very good -- it doesn't do a good job of distinguishing actual pointing from the edge of your palm hitting the trackpad. I don't know. It's not a great trackpad, and Windows has some issues on this laptop as well, but it's conspicuously better. (I have it set up to dual-boot.)

Is this a known issue? Is there something I should be doing that would make it better?

No answers, but an idea for testing. Try booting to a live CD of something other than Mint (and preferably something not Ubuntu-based--perhaps Knoppix or Porteus) and testing the trackpad.

If the problem occurs then, you will at least know it's not a Mint-specific issue and might be a hardware issue.

Also, test whether you get similar behavior with a mouse.
