Webmin simple backup fails
I have a single RedHat 7.3 server that I need to backup maybe once a week. I can get around in Linux, but am not very good, yet...Anyways, I created a share on my Windows machine and gave everyone Full permissions. On the RH server, I created a directory called "backup" and them successfully mounted my Windows share to it. On the Linux box I can access the share using my mount point and create files in there with no problmes. However, when I create a test backup in Webmin by trying to just backup my personal home directory on the Linux box (/home/myusername), this is what I get...
Performing backup of /home/sdrew to /backup .. DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Thu Dec 15 10:03:01 2005 DUMP: Dumping /dev/sda5 (/ (dir home/sdrew)) to /backup DUMP: Added inode 8 to exclude list (journal inode) DUMP: Added inode 7 to exclude list (resize inode) DUMP: Label: / DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files] DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories] DUMP: estimated 867 tape blocks. DUMP: Cannot open output "/backup". DUMP: fopen on /dev/tty fails: No such device or address DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted. .. backup failed! any help is much appreciated! |
Dump probably is struggling with the permissions on the Windows Share. Can you just copy everything locally from the share to the Linux box, then backup from there?

Other way around.....I want to backup my Linux box to the windows share. Also, the Linux box has a tape drive that I could do a dump to, but are there any directories that I CANT backup? This server is a simple file server and Apach server that runs a couple small internal web based applications....thanks.

Ok, well I am successfully dumping some directories to the tape device with no problem, so I'll just use that. How can I view the contentes of a dump to tape? I just want to be able to check now and then to be sure that the appropriate files I need are getting backed up...Thanks.
