webmin open ldap users and groups

I'm trying to get the open ldap users and groups module working correctly, for webmin. So far, I've added 1 user manually. I have added 1 group using webmin. Both the user and group show up in ldapsearch, however, only the group, added by webmin, shows up in webmin... the user does not. Further, when I attempt to add a user, I get errors with the username. I have tried just using the username and I have tried using cn=user,dc=example,dc=com. I get errors. Any idea of the format needed, or what I'm doing wrong? I don't want to have to go through and use ldif files...
