Webmin Not working Fedora Core 3

Hello,

I have been using Webmin 1.180 on an old HP Pavillion that has Redhat 9.0 installed with a 2.4.x kernel. On a newer server machine, I tried to install Fedora Core 3 on the server and it works just fine. I installed webmin 1.180 on it and it says that it installs fine, but when I type in the address of the server (for example https://192.168.5.24:10000/) my browser says that there was a timeout. When I type in the address https://192.168.5.23:10000/ for my other server, the login screen comes up. I am trying to access the server from a remot e machine on my network. How can I get Webmin working on Fedora 3? Is there a problem with the 2.6.x kernel?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try it like this
http://192.168.5.24:10000

I tried this as well. I actually tried this first, then I realized the message said to try https instead of http.

No, mine works ok.
Can you access it locally with the command: http://localhost:10000 ?
If so, there may be a firewall issue.

I have the server setup using the server configuration and lynx isnt installed so I am unable to tell if it is showing up locally. Is there something that I can do to the firewall in order to test if that is the problem?

You can run it locally from Konqueror. Are all of the machines on your local network and behind a firewall?

Yes, I have a belkin router/firewall.

There are 7 machines on the network. I can log into the Red Hat 9 Server from any of the machines but I cannot on the Fedora one. On the Fedora Server, I do not have X, KDE, or Gnome installed; everything is from the command line (i thought it would make things run quicker).

Ive reinstalled Fedora 4 times and have gotten the same result each time. I have tried using Webmin 1.170 and 1.180 both and have gotten the same problem each time; even though the program tells me that it installed successfully. I cannot seem to get port 80 to display anything as well so I dont know what is the issue here. Im lost . . .

Also, I forgot to note, the Redhat version doesnt have a GUI either, everything runs from the command line. I have a mixture of Win2k and WinXP machines on the network and I have used both Mozilla, Firefox, and IE to test and they all have given the same results. The server request times out after a while.

Is there something I can try?

Fedora has a nice firewall tool from the command: system-config-securitylevel . There is also the legacy tool called setup .
They allow you to decide what is allowed or not. On a completely local network which is already behind a firewall, you may even disable the firewall for the FC3 box and see if that helps.

Thanks Homey!!!!

That did work by shutting off the firewall. I will be placing this box in my DMZ later so eventually, im going to have to turn the firewall back on. I just used the system-config-securitylevel tool again to open port 10000 on the server and retested it out and it now works behind the firewall. Thanks again for the tools you mentioned. I never knew system-config-securitylevel or the setup program existed!!! I really appreciate your help with this issue!!

Much Thanks.

webmin not connecting

Hello - I have the same problem - except with webmin 1.190 - I disabled FC3's firewall and still nothing...I don't know what to try as I haven't used webmin with FC3 yet...

You just have to open port 10000 for webmin to work. Use the system-config-securitylevel script and enable firewall, add 10000 to the field below the checkboxes, and you should be ok
