Webmin

hello

i have installed webmin in my backtrack distribution

i am trying to investigate the application, however, i am facing some problems
my questions are:
1-what is the security weakness in Webmin software so i can avoid in maintaing my system?
2- do i need to be root to administer the services using the Webmin?
3-i tried to investigate the SSH login, but my question is, were i will be able to remote access another account? it is possible?
4- last quesiton, i tried to backup some files yet i couldnt do it
what i need to do to create .tar.gz file?
Thanks

The same type of weaknesses that are potentially present in any 'net-facing HTTP/S server + perl programs that run as root to accomplish tasks on the system. If you really can't restrict Webmin's web server port via packet filtering or external ACLs, you might consider front-ending it with Apache web server or nginx.

Webmin has a flexible permissions system that allows you to dole out administrative rights on a per-module basis (i.e. you can grant or deny administrative access to certain users or groups, IIRC).

I don't understand.

Please read the tar(1) manpages, and cruise the 'net for examples. A simple invocation with the compression you're looking for would be:
Code:
$ tar cfz tarball.tgz /directory/here /another/one/here

Sorry - not sure what you are referring to, and I don't recall Webmin ever asking that at install time. You may want to tinker a bit and observe listening tcp sockets ($ netstat -ltn) after each install path.
