webgl doesn't function in FF 5.0

hello,

well i thought about trying out the new webgl feature , however i didn't get off to a good start as , all apps that i've seen on the web aren't running ?

complaining about incompatibility , what the heck ?

isn't FF 5.0 supposed to be this new Uber release with the most advanced technologies enabled?

regards

WebGL is highly dependent on your video card drivers. What video card do you have?

well according to lspci i've one of those knock-off vga's by intel " Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)".

well i understand that opengl/webgl is hardware accelerated but OpenGL apps run fine under the Mesa driver , why is webgl different ?

cheers

Different applications are going to have difference requirements.

What's the output of 'glxinfo'? Assuming your drivers are working properly, you can try setting the MOZ_GLX_IGNORE_BLACKLIST environmental variable and then launching firefox.

how am i supposed to set it ?

cheers

Elv13 07-08-2011 07:06 PM

export MOZ_GLX_IGNORE_BLACKLIST
firefox

But I think this is the old way to do this. I heard about mozilla adding an about:config variable for it. But be warned, if your card is blacklisted (I think mesa is blacklisted), forcing this may cause kernel panics, xorg crash and even file system corruption. I would avoid doing this is you just want to see a 3D teapot in your browser. It is disabled because your driver is considered too unstable to safely execute WebGL content for both security and stability reasons.

TobiSGD 07-08-2011 07:18 PM

I have the same problems with the Radeon HD3200 in my laptop and the Geforce GTX260 in my desktop, both with proprietary drivers. I doubt that all those cards are on that blacklist, they work fine when I use that environment variable.
Also there are options like webgl-force-enabled in about:config, but at least on my machines (Slackware 13.37, Firefox 5.0) they don't seem to do anything.

Holy Bejesus !!!
yeah right screw that 3d teapot or whatever i was supposed to see in my browser..

well i ain't gonna try that env variable after what i've heard , i'm still wondering however why all this fuss around webgl in particular what is it that makes this browser app so recklessly dangerous and unstable in comparison to other 3d apps?

cheers

Again, different 3D applications have different requirements. WebGL is probably using OpenGL extensions that other 3D applications you've tried simply aren't using. Those other applications would be equally unsafe to run if they were using extensions that your drivers claimed to properly support but didn't actually support.

entz 07-09-2011 06:00 AM

well i've one final question ,

whom is doing the blacklisting ?

the browser ? or the OpenGL library?

cheers

Elv13 07-09-2011 02:13 PM

Mozilla Corp. after some testing and checking bugs report during the beta period. The driver/OpenGL -should- give a blacklist of unimplemented functions, but mesa implement it in a totally unreliable way, claiming support for features not even implemented.

So it is blacklisted for Intel, AMD and NVidia cards. Is there actually any driver that works for WebGL? Seems to me that is simply not supported officially for Linux, since it works perfectly here when I disable the blacklisting.

Elv13 07-09-2011 04:22 PM

It is enabled by default for me, NVIDIA 8800GTX with closed driver.

TobiSGD 07-09-2011 04:35 PM

Then I wonder why it isn't enabled on the GTX260 in my desktop, also closed driver. I have to use the blacklist-trick.

entz 07-09-2011 08:02 PM

okay how can i get it webgl working on my video card (the crappy intel one) without blowing up my system or something ?

i guess i need to install a new driver, don't I?
