Everytime I use a new version of linux I run into this problem again.
in 11.04 i was using

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so firefox
to fix my flipped webcam and it worked great now that im in 11.10 with gnomeshell its not working any ideas?

Try this: Paul Labis: Fix upside-down or inverted webcam on Ubuntu linux

Using
Code:
export LIBV4LCONTROL_FLAGS=3 && LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so cheese
works for me, although there's a warning on that page that this is only for debug. It's probably not the best solution.
