Web developer - using ONLY Linux - are there any?
 

Hi all

I hear a lot of positive things Linux and want to learn and use it. But I'm a web developer and want to learn before spending time on learning Linux, whether there are enough software for a "complete web developing project". I mean is there a powerful editor like Homesite, an image editor like Photoshop or Paintshop Pro etc. etc.

I've never used Homesite (because Linux is my main OS for many years), so I can't compare it with Linux HTML editors. There are many of them: some commercial, some free. Examples: IBM WebSphere, CoffeCup, Composer from Mozilla, WebDesigner, Bluefish, Quanta and many, many others. You should install and test them.
Image editor: most people prefer GIMP. Very powerful, but works a bit different than the others you know. There's a Windows version, so you may try it.

You can make your system dual boot to keep both Windows and Linux and in some modern distros (like Mandrake and SuSE) you don't have to worry much about console commands etc (most configuration can be done in GUI).
And, as I said before, only you can say if you like Linux or not and if you can do your work with it or not. You can always go back...

I'll have a look at the windows version of GIMP.

In fact I want to get rid of all these Microsoft products because although they take a lot of money and they just give a crashing thing. My windows explorer crushes more than 10 times a day! I have all the updates installed.

But I earn my life using programs running on Windows :( That forces me to use Windows still..

I too develop web content. Of course, I recently switched to linux because of this, and there were no restrictions:
A) I could run my own apache webhost to test out my content, including PHP and MySQL (which is VERY important to me);
B) I could use GIMP to make images, whereas to continue on independantly before, I would have had to purchase a copy of Photoshop;
C) Notepad was my only other creation tool, so switching to pine / kedit isn't too hard.

I don't know about WYSIWYG ed's for Linux, but I'm sure there are many...

What I did was do a search on Sourceforge.net for Homesite like apps and there are tons. The GIMP takes some getting used to, but it is a solid Photoshop replacement. I still prefer Photoshop though since it handles fonts and text better.

I haven't found a replacement for Flash building yet, but then again I haven't really tried looking much. But for Homesite-like apps, there are numerous suitable replacements.

At times I do some in Dreamweaver, for tables and such when I'm lazy in Win98 cause I still love Photoshop. Then use vi for html editing and the such.... Sometimes I'll use The Gimp, but still can't wing myself off of Photoshop. Flash, really not that good at it yet, but when I do play it, really no alternatives but to run it under Win98, unless you got some emulator to run it in Linux.

I have found that doing web development is easier on a linux machine, I do not use homesite or anything like that, I always used notepad, but I have found a editor for linux called kate that is much better than anything I ever used, plus like Kows said it is great testing the mysql and php stuff on my machine before it goes into development, for the graphic stuff I am stuck in photoshop as I just plain don't want to change :-) For stability and workability linux is the best for it, but be ready for a bit of a "culture shock" going to linux, it has a stiff learning curve, but the end result is well worth it.
